12, 2002 HAVERFORD, PA -- The Washington College Shorewomen shot 23% in the first half and trailed by nine points at the break en route to a 71-69 Centennial Conference loss at Haverford College this evening. The Shorewomen fell to 10-13 overall and 4-9 in conference play, while the Fords improved to 4-18 and 2-12. The nine-point halftime deficit proved too much for the Shorewomen to overcome as they tried to make a comeback in the second half. Washington trailed by 14 points, 52-38, with 11:37 to play in the game, but eventually whittled the margin down to four with 21 seconds left on a three-pointer by senior forward Allyson Britton (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth) that trimmed the lead to 67-63. After a pair of made free throws by Haverford's Alyssa Kennedy, WC sophomore guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) canned a three-pointer to cut the lead to three at 69-66 with seven seconds left. Caitie Kimura of the Fords then made two free throws to ice the game. Patronas hit another three at the buzzer to account for the final score. Haverford's Erin McCartney posted game highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds and shot 9-for-13 from the field. Kennedy added 17 points, while Rachel Melroy finished with 13. Britton led Washington with 20 points and made nine-of-ten free throws. Freshman forward Liz Smith (Hagerstown, MD/Boonsboro) added 13 points, while sophomore forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) scored 12. Patronas finished with 10 points on the night. After their tough first half, the Shorewomen recovered to shoot 44% in the second half and finished at 34% from the field for the game. The Fords shot 37%. The Shorewomen will play their final home game of the season Thursday against Bryn Mawr at 7:00 p.m.
