1, 2001 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Twenty-six percent shooting from the floor cost the Washington College Shorewomen a chance to post in a win in their first Centennial Conference game of the season this afternoon at the Cain Athletic Center. Instead, the visiting Gettysburg College Bullets were 66-54 winners, improving to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in league play. The Shorewomen slipped to 2-3 and 0-1. The game remained close throughout most of the first half as the lead changed hands 13 times in the opening stanza. WC took a one-point lead at 27-26 with 4:06 to go in the half when sophomore guard Yianna Patronas (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) converted a conventional three-point play. After the two squads exchanged misses, Gettysburg sophomore guard Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) converted a lay-up and free throw of her own to put the Bullets up 29-27. Bear's play ignited an 11-0 Bullet run to end the half as Gettysburg led, 37-27, at the break. In the second half, the Shorewomen thrice cut the lead to eight in the first five minutes, but never did manage to get any closer as Gettysburg led by as many as 16 points late in the game. Four Bullets reached double figures in scoring, led by freshman forward Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's), who pumped in 16 points. Junior forward Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards. Bear finished with 13 points, while senior guard Steph Drevna (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) scored 11 points and dished out seven assists. Senior forward Allyson Britton (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth) led the Shorewomen with nine points. Washington returns to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Swarthmore.
