31, 2002 BALTIMORE, MD The Washington College Shorewomen picked up a win in the final non-conference game on their 2001-02 schedule by defeating host College of Notre Dame (MD), 51-42, this evening in Baltimore. The Shorewomen improved to 9-10 overall with the win, while the Gators fell to 10-8. The game's first half ended in a 23-23 tie. Washington shot 29% in the half, while Notre Dame shot 32% in the period. In the second half, WC still couldn't get things going offensively and shot 28% from the field, but held the Gators to four-for-23 shooting (17%) in the final 20 minutes to earn the victory. Washington also won the game at the free throw line and on the glass. The Shorewomen converted 12-of-15 free throws for an 80% mark, while Notre Dame shot 67% from the stripe. Washington outrebounded the Gators 50-38 overall and 18-9 on the offensive end. For the game, the two teams combined to make just 31-of-114 field goal attempts and committed 46 turnovers between them. Washington sophomore guard Karen Simos (North Potomac, MD/Wooton) scored a game-high 16 points and collected eight boards. Though both struggled from the field, senior forward Allyson Britton (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth) and freshman forward Liz Smith (Hagerstown, MD/Boonsboro) pulled down 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Sophomore forward Meghan Hartzell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) contributed eight points and two blocked shots in just 18 minutes of play. Kathleen Burley led the Gators with 13 points. Karen Burley had a team-best 10 boards. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Dickinson.
