Shorewomen Finish Season with Sweep of McDaniel
Win is First Over Green Terror Since 2005
WESTMINSTER, MD -- The Washington College volleyball team finished its 2011 season with a 25-13, 25-18, 25-12, Centennial Conference win over host McDaniel this afternoon in Westminster, MD. The Shorewomen finished the season 16-12 overall and 2-8 in conference play with the win, while the Green Terror finished 0-25 and 0-10.
Washington pounded down 12 kills and served five aces en route to a 25-13 first-set win, finishing the set on a 13-4 run. The Shorewomen trailed in the second set, 10-7, before running off seven straight points to take control, going on to win, 25-18, while serving six aces in the set. The Shorewomen dominated the third set as senior defensive specialist Megan Hudson (Sparks, MD/Hereford) served seven straight points during the 25-12 win.
Freshman middle hitter Sarah Beresik (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) finished with a career-high nine kills in the win, while junior middle hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) also recorded nine kills and served eight aces. Sophomore setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) recorded 23 assists and eight digs for the Shorewomen.
Anne McShea finished with six kills and eight digs for McDaniel, while Hannah Krobock added 12 digs.
The Shorewomen's win over McDaniel was their first over the Green Terror since a 30-24, 30-28, 31-29, victory September 17, 2005, in the Maryland Division III Tournament, breaking a string of six consecutive losses in the series. Washington's 16-12 overall record this season is its first winning record since 1993 (25-16) and represents its highest single-season win total since finishing 17-21 in 1994.
