Seventh-Ranked Jumbos Blank Shorewomen, 9-0
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Tufts University, ranked seventh in the nation in Division III and third in the Northeast region, defeated host Washington College, the seventh-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, 9-0, in a non-conference women's tennis match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Jumbos improve to 2-1 with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 6-1 with their first loss of the season.
The Jumbos took a 2-0 lead in the match as Sophie Schonfeld and Rebecca Kimmel completed an 8-1 win over Washington sophomore Bethany Daller (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) and sophomore Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) at No. 3 doubles and Samantha Gann and Janice Lam put the finishing touches on an 8-0 triumph at No. 2 over junior Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) and junior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) shortly thereafter. Tufts completed the sweep of doubles when Lindsey Katz and Eliza Flynn finished a 9-7 win against senior Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and sophomore Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech) at No. 1.
Tufts clinched the match with a pair of 6-0, 6-0, wins at the bottom of the singles line-up where Nathalie Schils beat Stevens and Lam beat Cohen to push the lead to 5-0. Gann added a 6-3, 6-1, win over McNicol at No. 3; Flynn downed Bercovici (ranked eighth in the Atlantic South in singles), 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2; Kimmel beat Daller, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 4, and Katz (ranked 20th in the Northeast in singles) topped Finnegan, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7, at No. 1.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Ursinus.
