CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Washington College head women's soccer coach Kanute Drugan recently announced the team's captains for the 2013 season: junior midfielder/forward Heather Smith (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie), junior midfielder Kathleen Maleski (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll), sophomore midfielder/forward Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep), and sophomore defender Taylor Matteson (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson).
Smith has scored 11 career goals and assisted on six others while taking 71 shots in 48 career games. She earned a spot on the 2012 Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll and her six goals during the 2012 season tied her for the team lead.
Maleski, who also plays lacrosse at the College, has registered 16 shots in 40 career games. She is a two-time Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll qualifier.
Patinella had a big sophomore season in 2012, sharing the team lead in goals with six and recording a single-season school-record six assists. Over her first two seasons, she has tallied 63 shots in 32 games.
Matteson was named her team's Most Improved Player as a freshman in 2011. In 2012, she recorded her first career point, an assist. She has tallied 12 shots in 31 career games played.
The Shorewomen finished with a record of 6-9-1 overall and 2-7-1 in Centennial Conference play during the 2012 season, their first under Drugan. The Shorewomen's six wins matched their win total from the previous two seasons combined. Their 6-9-1 record also marked the first time in 15 all-time varsity seasons that the Shorewomen finished with fewer than 10 losses and their 2-7-1 Centennial record marked their best-ever conference performance.
