Sophomore Nets Game's Only Goal in 20th Minute
FREDERICK, MD -- Sophomore midfielder/forward Heather Smith (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) scored the only goal of the game in the 20th minute to give visiting Washington College a 1-0 win over host Hood College in non-conference women's soccer action this afternoon.
Junior defender Gabby Antalffy (Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point) found Smith for the game's lone goal at 19:48, sending a cross from the right that Smith kicked in out of the air. Freshman midfielder/forward Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep) nearly gave the Shorewomen (2-5-1) a 2-0 lead at 52:02, but her shot rang off the post.
The Shorewomen finished with 23 shots in the game, their most since peppering Trinity (DC) with 40 in a 3-0 win on September 24, 2009. Hood (1-7) totaled just four shots in the contest. Washington enjoyed a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Tori Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) made two saves en route to her third shutout of the season for the Shorewomen. Kristen Cacciola made eight saves for the Blazers.
The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a 4:00 p.m. game at Cabrini.
