Shorewomen Take Second in Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The 14th-ranked Washington College women's rowing team opened its spring racing season with a home regatta against fifth-ranked Wellesley and Mount Holyoke this morning on the Chester River.
Wellesley swept all four of the regatta's races. The varsity eight was the closest race as the Blue won in 7:18.27 to the Shorewomen's 7:23.78. Mount Holyoke was third in 8:09.65. Wellesley took the second varsity eight in 7:58.25 to Washington's 8:15.52 and Mount Holyoke's 8:40.00. Wellesley won the third varsity eight in 8:34.75 to Mount Holyoke's 8:19.19 and captured the novice eight in 8:11.27 to Mount Holyoke's 8:49.12. Washington's novice four raced against the other schools' novice eights and finished in 10:03.84.
Conditions were sunny, but cold. The novices rowed in little to no wind, but a breeze built throughout the rest of the regatta.
Sophomore Christie Phebus (Trappe, MD/Easton) served as coxswain of the Shorewomen's first varsity eight. Sophomore Kelly Bird (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) sat stroke, senior Rachel Benders (Cleveland Heights, OH/Beaumont School) was in the seven seat, senior Kate Fiori (Boston, MA/Dana Hall School) was in the six seat, sophomore Mickey Fili (Sparks, MD/Hereford) sat in the five seat, sophomore Taira Sullivan (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) was in the four seat, junior Valeria DiLisi (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) was in the three seat, sophomore Ashley Myles (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts) sat in the two seat, and junior Ellie Hilton (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) was the bow.
Junior Abigail Thomas (Hughesville, MD/Thomas Stone) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's second varsity eight. Sophomore Krystal Brostek (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) sat stroke, junior Emily Sahadeo (College Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) sat in the seven seat, freshman Leslie Rothstein (Lower Merion, PA/Lower Merion) was in the six seat, senior Lauren Halla (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) sat in the five seat, freshman Kayla Noll (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) was in the four seat, freshman Katie Washart (Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) sat in the three seat, freshman Giavonella Knapp (VIneland, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) was in the two seat, and junior Allie Everhart (Sparks, MD/Hereford) was the bow.
Freshman Jaclyn Gibbons (Hingham, MA/Hingham) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's novice four. Freshman Maggie Perry (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre) sat stroke, freshman Michaela Martino (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) was in the three seat, freshman Kelly Dobroski (West Brandywine, PA/Coatesville Area) was in the two seat, and freshman Monica Benitez (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) was the bow.
The Shorewomen return to action two weeks from today with a home regatta against Division I school Villanova and Division II schools Philadelphia University and Dowling College.
