Shorewomen Beat Five MARC Rivals at Knecht Cup
CHERRY HILL, NJ -- Washington College's first varsity eight made a statement today, beating five boats from Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference rival schools to win the women's Division III varsity eight at the Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, NJ. The Shorewomen's second varsity eight also competed at the regatta, finishing fifth in its heat.
The first varsity eight won its race in 7:02.37, 4.63 seconds better than Marietta (7:07.00) and 11.57 seconds better than defending MARC Champion Mary Washington (7:13.94). North Park (7:34.48), Bryn Mawr (7:38.95), and Rutgers-Camden (8:23.97) rounded out the race. The only MARC schools not competing at the event were Franklin & Marshall and Richard Stockton.
The Shorewomen's second varsity eight competed in a second varsity eight event against schools from all division, finishing fifth in its heat in 7:58.14. Delaware won the heat in 7:33.62, Rutgers was second in 7:42.63, Fordham was third in 7:48.90, Old Dominion was fourth in 7:53.97, and Mary Washington was sixth in 8:17.96.
Junior Kelsie Jensen (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's first varsity eight. Junior Kendall Mulligan (Southbury, CT/Westover School) sat stroke, senior Sarah Strickland (Potomac, MD/Holton-Arms) was in the seven seat, freshman Valeria DiLisi (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) was in the six seat, sophomore Kate Fiori (Boston, MA/Dana Hall School) was in the five seat, junior Jenna Moore (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales) sat in the four seat, sophomore Lauren Halla (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) was in the three seat, senior Catherine Black (Kimberton, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) sat in the two seat, and senior Christine Lynch (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) was the bow.
Freshman Abigail Thomas (Hughesville, MD/Thomas Stone) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's second varsity eight. Sophomore Brittany Krueger (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) sat stroke, freshman Elizabeth Hilton (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) was in the seven seat, sophomore Rachel Benders (Cleveland Heights, OH/Beaumont School) sat in the six seat, junior Diane Hagmann (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) sat in the five seat, freshman Carly Ogren (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) was in the four seat, freshman Emily Sahadeo (College Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) was in the three seat, senior Caiti Ambrose (Milmay, NJ/Sacred Heart) sat in the two seat, and senior Robin Heese (Phoenix, MD/Maryvale Prep) was the bow.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday at the Worcester Invitational in Worcester, MA.
