Garnet Best Shorewomen, 66-58
Pledger With 15 Points and 10 Boards For Fifth Double-Double of Season
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Elle Larsen had a double-double with a game-best 23 points and tied for the game-highs with 12 rebounds and three blocked shots as visiting Swarthmore downed host Washington College, 66-58, on Wednesday night at the Cain Athletic Center in Centennial Conference women's basketball action. The Garnet improve to 17-5 overall and 13-4 in the conference, while the Shorewomen drop to 10-12 and 8-9 respectively.
The Garnet raced out to a quick 10-2 lead with 15:07 left in the first half on a layup by Katie Lytle. The Shorewomen stormed back with a 19-10 run to take their lone lead of the ballgame at 21-20 with 6:43 remaining in the first half on a three-pointer by junior guard Kelly Mitchell (Laurel, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross). The lead was short lived however as just 16 seconds later Kayla Mortizky canned a three to put Swarthmore back up for good at 23-21. The triple ignited an 8-0 run as the Garnet took a 28-21 lead with 3:53 left following a layup by Madeline Ross. The Shorewomen scored the final four points of the first half to trim the Garnet lead at halftime to just three points at 28-25.
In the second half, Swarthmore used a 16-5 run to take a 44-30 lead with 13:44 to go in the game on a Larsen layup on a feed from Ross. The 14-point lead was the biggest of the game of the guests and they achieved the 14-point lead on three occasions. Washington answered with a 9-0 spurt to trim the lead to 44-39 with 10:23 remaining in the game on a pair of free throws by freshman guard Ashley Espinosa (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin). However the Garnet answered with an 11-2 run to take their final 14 point lead of the game at 55-41 with 6:41 to go in the contest on a Lytle jumper. The closest Washington would get the rest of the way would be six points, which they did three times. The final time they got within six was at 63-57 with 58 seconds left in the tilt on a free throw by junior guard Claire Mattox (Arlington, VA/Potomac School).
In addition to Larsen, the Garnet got 17 points from Ross and 11 points from Moritzky. Joining Larsen with three blocks was Jessica Jowdy. Lytle grabbed 10 rebounds for the Garnet. Swarthmore shot 41% from the floor (25-for-61), 30% from three-point range (7-for-23) and 50% from the foul line (9-for-18). Swarthmore turned it over 11 times.
Junior forward Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) had her fifth double-double of the season with a team-best 15 points to go with 10 rebounds. Espinosa had 12 points for the hosts. Sophomore guard Emily Hubley (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds to tie Larsen for game-high and also had a game-best two steals. Mitchell passed out four assists for game-best. The Shorewomen shot 27% from the floor (20-for-75), 11% from three-point range (2-for-18) and 70% from the foul line (16-for-23). The Shorewomen held a slim 51-48 edge on the boards and turned it over just six times and held a 19-3 edge in bench points.
The Shorewomen host Gettysburg in the home finale on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Centennial Conference action.
