Brewers Drop Shorewomen, 66-53, in Consolation Game
Pledger Posts Double-Double in Loss
MONTCLAIR, NJ -- Vassar College topped Washington College, 66-53, in the consolation game of the Montclair State Holiday Tournament today in Montclair, NJ. The Brewers improved to 7-1 with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 6-5 with the loss.
Vassar led by as many as 10 points in the first half and took a 32-24 lead into the intermission. The Brewers scored seven of the first nine points in the second half to push the margin to 39-26 on a Nyah Berg free throw with 15:38 remaining. Vassar maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Cydni Matsuoka led Vassar with a game-high 19 points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Berg added 16 points and three steals, while Caitlin Drakeley chipped in nine points, four assists, five rebounds, and two blocks.
Junior forward Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) tallied a double-double for the Shorewomen in the loss with a team-high 16 points and game-best 13 rebounds. Freshman guard Ashley Espinosa (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) added eight points in the loss.
Vassar shot 46% from the field in the game to Washington's 39%. The Shorewomen committed 28 turnovers in the loss to the Brewers' 18, but did hold a 42-35 advantage on the boards.
Pledger and Matsuoka represented their respective teams on the All-Tournament Team.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Gettysburg.
