Shorewomen Finish Season with School Record-Tying 16 Wins
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College jumped out to a 36-5 halftime lead and rolled to a 73-35 Centennial Conference women's basketball win over visiting Bryn Mawr this afternoon in the season finale for both teams. The Shorewomen finish the season 16-9 overall and 11-9 in conference play, tying the program record for wins in a season and breaking the program record for conference wins in a season.
Senior guards Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) and Sally O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic), both members of the Shorewomen's 1,000-point club, closed out their collegiate careers. Tait, the program's all-time leader in assists, dished out nine helpers to finish with 488 in her career. She also scored two points to finish with 1,068 career points and swiped four steals. O'Donnell scored 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out four assists. She finishes with 1,018 points at Washington College.
The Shorewomen dominated the game down low, outscoring the Owls, 36-8, in the paint and holding a commanding 57-31 advantage on the boards, including a 25-6 advantage on the offensive end. Sophomore forward/center Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) posted game highs of 17 points and 16 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season. Ten of her 16 boards came on the offensive end. She was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line in the win. Junior center Erin Kile (Benton, PA/Benton) added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Shorewomen, shooting 7-for-9 from the field and 2-for-3 from the charity stripe.
Jackie Handy paced the Owls (0-25, 0-20) with 11 points and four rebounds. Chantille Kennedy added 10 points off the Bryn Mawr bench.
The Shorewomen's previous 16-win season came in their fifth season of varsity play. They posted a 16-8 record during the 1997-98 campaign.
