O'Donnell Nets 1,000th Collegiate Point
SWARTHMORE, PA – Senior guard/forward Sally O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) scored a game-high 17 points and her 1,000th collegiate point as visiting Washington College downed host Swarthmore, 67-44, at Tarble Pavilion in Centennial Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night. The Shorewomen improve to 13-9 overall and 8-9 in conference play, while the Garnet drop to 8-13 and 6-11 respectively. With the 13 wins, the Shorewomen clinch their first winning season since 1998-99, when the squad went 15-9.
O'Donnell scored her 1,000th collegiate point when she sank the second of two free throws with 17:40 left in the first half to put WC up 6-5. Following a three-pointer by sophomore guard Kelly Mitchell (Laurel, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) put WC up 17-12, Swarthmore went on a 10-5 run to level the game at 22-22 with 6:47 to go in the first half on a Elle Larsen layup. O'Donnell would put WC back up for good at 24-22 on a jumper 48 seconds later and that ignited a 13-3 run to close out the first half that put the Shorewomen up 35-25. Two free throws by sophomore forward/center Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) with less than a second left in the first half closed out the scoring. O'Donnell and Mitchell each scored 10 points in the first half.
In the second half, Washington opened up the stanza on a 14-4 run to take a 49-29 lead with 13:05 left in the game on a layup by junior center Erin Kile (Benton, PA/Benton). The layup capped a 27-7 run spanning both halves. The Shorewomen built their lead to as many as 29 points with 2:20 to go in the ballgame on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Katie Bay (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West).
O'Donnell has now 1,013 career points and 980 points at Washington. She scored 33 points at St. Thomas Aquinas College, a Division II institution, in the Fall 2008 semester. She also totaled eight rebounds and blocked a game-best two shots in the triumph.
Pledger totaled 15 points and a contest-high 11 rebounds for her team-leading 12th double-double of the campaign. Mitchell added 13 points in the victory. Senior guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) handed out six assists to tie for game-high and grabbed eight rebounds. The Shorewomen held a commanding 48-30 edge in rebounds.
Larsen had 15 points to lead the Garnet, while Kayla Mortizky had 10 points and tied Tait for game-high in assists with six. Katie Lytle grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the hosts.
The Shorewomen shot 46% from the floor, 42% from three-point range and 71% (10-for-14) from the foul line, while the Garnet shot 29% from the field, 24% from behind the arc and 50% (6-for-12) from the charity stripe. Both teams had 13 turnovers in the game.
Washington returns to the court on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Gettysburg for a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game.
