Mitchell, Fitzgerald Reach Career Highs in Scoring
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Sophomore guard Kelly Mitchell (Laurel, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) scored a career-high 20 points and drained six three-pointers and sophomore forward Erin Fitzgerald (Greensboro, NC/Bishop McGuiness) scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead host Washington College to a 63-48 non-conference women's basketball win over visiting Goucher this afternoon inside Cain Athletic Center.
The Shorewomen (3-4) led by as many as 10 points in the first half and took a 33-29 lead into the intermission. Mitchell converted five of her three-pointers during the first half as the two teams combined to shoot 11-for-21 from three-point range over the the opening 20 minutes.
Washington held a 41-33 lead with 14:30 left in the second half before running off 12 unanswered points in less than three minutes to build a 53-33 cushion on Mitchell's sixth three-pointer. The Shorewomen led by at least 14 points the rest of the way.
Mitchell's six three-pointers came on just eight attempts from beyond the arc. She was 7-for-13 from the field overall and also brought down a career-high five rebounds. Fitzgerald swatted three shots to go along with her double-double. She was 6-for-11 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Senior guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) added 12 points, a game-high eight assists, and eight rebounds for the victors.
Sharnell Huff, Elizabeth von Ende, and Shante Atkinson led the Gophers (1-7) with nine points each. After draining her third three-pointer in four attempts, Von Ende left the game after rolling her ankle in the first half.
Washington held a commanding 48-28 advantage on the boards in the win.
The Shorewomen return to action a week from today with a 5:00 p.m. non-conference home game against Wesley.
