Bears Rally Past Shorewomen, 50-44

Tait With 19 Points And Seven Rebounds For WC

COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Host Ursinus College got game-bests of 20 points and 14 rebounds from Lindsay Teuber as host Ursinus rallied from a 30-19 second-half deficit to best visiting Washington College, 50-44, on Wednesday night at Helfferich Hall in Centennial Conference women's basketball action.  The Bears, who clinched a spot in the tournament with the win, improve to 13-11 overall and 11-8 in the conference, while the Shorewomen fall to 11-13 and 9-10 respectively.  The Shorewomen's hopes to reach the conference tournament ended with the loss.

Washington led 30-19 with 13:39 left in the game on a free throw by junior guard/forward Sally O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic).  Ursinus began its game closing 31-13 run with a Teuber layup with 13:16 remaining in the game to cut the WC lead to 30-21.  A Teuber traditional three-point play cut the Shorewomen lead to 31-28 with 11:24 to go.  Jaclyn Hilf canned a three-pointer to trim the Washington lead to 35-34 with 8:40 to go on a pass from Teuber.  52 seconds later Teuber would give the Bears their first lead since early in the game on two free throws to make it 36-35.  Alex Shivers would give Ursinus its biggest lead of the game with 4:24 to go on a layup.  Washington would cut the lead to 43-39 with 3:18 to go on a layup by sophomore center Erin Kile (Benton, PA/Benton)Jen Sroba would put the Bears up 47-41 with 1:46 left on a layup.  The Shorewomen would cut the Bears lead to 47-44 with 24 second left on a free throw by freshman guard/forward Erin Fitzgerald (Greensboro, NC/Bishop McGuiness).  But Ursinus would ice the game with three free throws in the final 20 seconds to provide the final margin. 

In the first half, after a layup by Hilf to cut the Washington lead to 11-10 with 12:01 left, the guests scored the next six points to take a 17-10 lead with 5:33 remaining in the opening half on a long two-point jumper by Tait.  Alex Shivers capped a 6-1 spurt by canning a jumper with 3:01 to go in the half to trim the Shorewomen lead to 18-16.  But Washington scored the final four points of the half to take a 22-16 lead into the half.  A layup by freshman forward/center Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) with 26 ticks to go in the half capped the scoring in the half.

In the second half, Washington used an 8-3 run to open the final half and take a 30-19 lead with 13:39 left on a free throw by O'Donnell.  Tait scored five of the eight points during the run for the guests.

Shivers had 11 points for the Bears, while Hilf and Alli Rosati handed out three assists to lead the hosts.  Rosati had three steals to lead all players.  The Bears had a 40-36 edge on the boards, 16 of their 40 coming on the offensive glass.  That led to 11 second-chance points for the Bears.  Ursinus shot 30% for the game, 11% from three-point range and 65% from the free throw line. 

Tait scored 19 points and handed out a game-best four assists to lead Washington, while grabbing seven boards.  Kile grabbed eight rebounds to lead the team.  O'Donnell swatted three shots to lead all players.  WC shot 36% from the field, 14% from three-point range and 64% from the charity stripe.

Washington returns to action on Saturday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Bryn Mawr in the season finale for the Shorewomen.
