Shoremen Rack Up Nine Medals at Franklin & Marshall Invitational

Shoremen Finish Third in Overall Team Standings

LANCASTER, PA -- The Washington College men's swim team captured nine medals - including three golds - while finishing third of seven teams overall at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational, held Friday, yesterday, and today. Freshman Lucas Morgan (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) also broke the school record in the 1650 freestyle at the meet.

Sophomore Greg Lee (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) won the 100 butterfly in a Washington College season-best 52.47. In the 200 butterfly, Lee took the bronze with a WC season-best time of 2:00.13.

Washington won the 400 medley relay in a WC season-best time of 3:37.02. Freshman Charles Logan (Durham, NC/Riverside), freshman Eric Burcin (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), Lee, and sophomore Austin Yocum (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) swam the event for the Shoremen.

Logan, Burcin, Lee and freshman Sean Stevens (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) won the 200 medley relay for the Shoremen in a WC season-best time of 1:37.20.

Morgan finished second in the 400 individual medley in a WC season-best time of 4:12.83 to become the Shoremen's second-fastest swimmer ever in that event. In the 200 individual medley, Morgan captured the bronze in 2:00.51 to become the Shoremen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He broke the school record in the 1650 freestyle with a fifth-place finish in 16:53.82. During that race, he also swam a 10:09.07 1000 freestyle time, making him the Shoremen's second-fastest swimmer ever in that event. Morgan swam a meet-best and WC season-best 2:12.96 as an exhibition entrant in the 200 breaststroke preliminaries.  That time made him the school's third-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He also swam a WC season-best 4:54.16 as an exhibition entrant in the 500 freestyle, lowering his own eighth-fastest time in school history in the event. 

The Shoremen's 200 freestyle relay team of Lee, Yocum, Burcin, and Stevens captured bronze in a WC season-best time of 1:28.63

Yocum added a bronze medal in the 200 freestyle in a WC season-best 1:46.55 to become the Shoremen's fourth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He was also fourth in the 500 freestyle in 4:57.44 and ninth in the 1650 freestyle in 17:32.54.

Burcin won bronze in the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.60 after swimming a WC season-best 2:14.40 in the preliminaries to become the Shoremen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He took fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.89 after swimming a WC season-best 1:01.46 in the preliminaries to become the Shoremen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He was also eighth in the 50 freestyle in 22.97.

Logan placed sixth in the 200 backstroke in a WC season-best 2:03.76 to become the Shoremen's ninth-fastest swimmer ever in that event and seventh in the 100 backstroke in 56.34 after swimming a 55.69 in the preliminaries to lower his own ninth-fastest time in school history.  In the 100 butterfly, Logan finished eighth in 55.63. 

Stevens placed sixth in the 50 freestyle in 22.44 after swimming a WC season-best 22.38 in the preliminaries. He was also ninth in the 100 freestyle (49.24) and 12th in the 200 freestyle (1:51.74). 

Sophomore Steven Bilinski (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) placed seventh in the 200 butterfly in 2:10.03, while freshman Chris Kelly (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) was 10th in the 200 butterfly in 2:08.08 and 16th in the 100 butterfly in 57.13. 

Junior Robert Mix (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) was 12th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.26, 14th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:31.73, and 15th in the 1650 freestyle in 18:11.46. Junior Tad Derrick (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) placed 13th in the 400 individual medley in 5:02.66 and 15th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:35.53, while freshman DJ Bradshaw (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) was 14th in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.10 and 15th in the 200 backstroke in 2:13.47.

In addition to their three relay medals, Washington also placed fifth in the other two relay events at the meet. Lee, Yocum, Morgan, and Stevens were fifth in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:23.86, while Stevens, Yocum, Burcin, and Lee were fifth in the 400 freestyle relay in a WC season-best 3:17.02.

Host Franklin & Marshall finished first in the men's team standings at the meet. Ramapo was second. The Shoremen took third by 1.5 points over fourth-place Susquehanna, finishing with 511 points to the Crusaders' 509.5. St. Mary's was fifth, McDaniel sixth, and Widener seventh.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. non-conference home meet against Widener.
