Auger & Lee Lead Strong Effort for Shoremen at F&M Invitational
LANCASTER, PA -- Senior Austin Auger (McLean, VA/Langley) placed second in the 100 breaststroke and freshman Greg Lee (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) finished in the top four in both butterfly events to lead the Washington College men's swim team at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational yesterday and today in Lancaster, PA.
Auger's second-place time of 1:01.79 in the 100 breaststroke was a Washington College season best. He also tied for sixth in the 200 breaststroke in a WC season-best 2:17.63 and finished ninth in the 400 individual medley in a WC season-best 4:29.33. His time in the 400 individual medley made him the Shoremen's seventh-fastest swimmer ever in that event.
Lee's third-place time of 51.97 in the 100 butterfly was a WC season best and made him the Shoremen's second-fastest swimmer ever in the event. He just missed a medal in the 200 butterfly, finishing fourth in a WC season-best 1:59.26 to become the Shoremen's fourth-fastest swimmer in the event. In the 200 individual medley, Lee placed seventh in a WC season-best 2:01.20 to become the Shoremen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event.
Freshman Austin Yocum (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) scored points in three events for the Shoremen. His seventh-place WC season-best time of 1:47.80 in the 200 freestyle made him the Shoremen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He also finished 15th in the 500 freestyle in a WC season-best time of 5:03.51 and tied for 16th in the 100 freestyle in 50.05.
Freshman James Ray (Timonium, MD/Towson) placed eighth in the 100 backstroke in 56.50 and 11th in the 50 freestyle in a WC season-best 22.35. Ray also led off the 400 medley relay with a WC season-best 100 backstroke time of 55.10, making him the Shoremen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in the 100 backstroke.
Senior Johnny Helenek (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) placed 10th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:24.83 and 11th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.47. Senior Ross Mills (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) was 11th in the 200 butterfly in 2:10.45.
Freshman Spencer Kelley (Weston, CT/Weston) scored points in three events, placing 12th in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.23, tying for 13th in the 50 freestyle in 22.72, and finishing 14th in the 100 freestyle in 49.81.
Freshman Steven Bilinski (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) finished 12th in the 200 butterfly in 2:10.68 and 16th in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.52. Sophomore Robert Mix (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) finished 13th in the 400 individual medley in 4:43.01 and 16th in the 500 freestyle in 5:07.55.
Junior Spencer Van Cise (Temple City, CA/Temple City) placed 13th in the 1650 freestyle in 18:40.21. Sophomore Tad Derrick (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) placed 14th in both the 400 individual medley (4:43.94) and the 1650 freestyle (18:44.37).
In relay event highlights, the team of Ray, Auger, Lee, and Yocum were fourth in the 400 medley relay in a WC season-best time of 3:36.31. Ray, Auger, Lee, and Kelley placed sixth in the 200 medley relay in a WC season-best time of 1:39.02. Lee, Ray, Kelley, and Yocum were sixth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:17.62.
The Shoremen, who finished sixth of eight teams in the final team standings, return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. non-conference meet at Widener.
