Shoremen Chase Out Gophers, 3-1
Butler and Thompson Each Score First Collegiate Goals
TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore back Jack Butler (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and freshman midfielder Drew Thompson (Dumfries, Va./Woodbridge) each scored their first collegiate goal as visiting Washington College recorded a 3-1 victory over host Goucher on Wednesday night at Beldon Field in non-conference men's soccer action. The Shoremen improve to 3-1 on the year, while the Gophers fall to 4-2.
With the win, Washington is 3-1 for the first time since 2006 when the team opened 4-1. It was also the Shoremen's first win at Goucher since a 2-0 victory on September 21, 2005.
Washington got onto the scoreboard first at the 16:07 mark when Thompson finished off a cross from freshman forward Brian Wilkinson (Sykesville, Md./Mount St. Joseph) on the right side and Thompson drilled the shot into the left side of the net. The Shoremen made it 2-0 when a Goucher defender deflected a crossing pass into his own goal at 34:49 of the first half.
Butler made it 3-0 in the match's 66th minute when he scored off of a free kick after receiving a pass from freshman midfielder Dimitri Kaliakin (Landenberg, Pa./Salesianum School (Del.). It was Kaliakin's first collegiate assist and point. The Gophers finally scored with 18:10 to go in the contest when Brandon Weiner scored on a pass from John Sturgis.
Washington held a 17-9 advantage in shots and had a 7-6 edge in corner kicks. In goal, sophomore goalkeeper David Myers (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) made a pair of saves for the Shoremen in the win, while Nicholas Stolarz stopped three shots for the Gophers.
The Shoremen are on the road again this Saturday when they play at Gwynedd-Mercy in a non-conference contest. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m.
