Shoremen Open Fall at Navy Day Regatta

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Washington College men's rowing team opened its fall 2011 regatta season today at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

The Shoremen opened the day by placing eighth and ninth of 13 boats in the men's open pair. Sophomores Anthony Cairo (Port Murray, NJ/Warren Hills) and Dominic DiMarino (Wilmington, DE/Concord) and were eighth in 15:44.79, while junior Parker McIntosh (Berlin, MD/Worcester Prep) and sophomore Nick Stewart (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) finished ninth in 15:53.87. The University of Pennsylvania captured the top four spots in the race. Penn's lightweight "A" boat won in 14:54.32, Penn's open-weight "E" boat was second in 15:05.05, Penn's lightweight "B" boat was third in 15:07.04, and Penn's open-weight "A" boat was fourth in 15:12.77. Other than the Shoremen's two boats, all of the other boats in the race were from NCAA Division I or II schools or rowing clubs.

Washington's next race was the men's collegiate four. The Shoremen's "B" boat finished 13th of 17 in 14:49.05, while the "A" boat was 15th in 15:03.91. Merchant Marine, which finished 10th, and Philadelphia University, which finished 17th, were the only other boats in the race from non-NCAA Division I schools. Navy's "A" boat won the race in 13:09.93, while its "B" boat was second in 13:19.39 and Penn's "A" boat was third in 13:33.37.

Freshman Christie Phebus (Trappe, MD/Easton) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's "B" boat in the men's collegiate four. Sophomore Blake Weishaar (Denton, MD/Sts. Peter & Paul) sat stroke, sophomore Jack McCarthy (Long Beach Island, NJ/The Hun School) was in the three seat, sophomore Drew Pizzala (Towson, MD/Boys' Latin) sat in the two seat, and sophomore Rob Billings (Easton, MD/Easton) was the bow.

Sophomore Becca Wozniak (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's "A" boat in the men's collegiate four. Junior Robert Storck (Wilton, CT/St. Mark's School [MA]) sat stroke, sophomore Conor Howlett (Tampa, FL/H.B. Plant) was in the three seat, senior Miqdad Annab (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) was in the two seat, and junior Kyle Benk (Bloomsburry, NJ/Phillipsburg) was the bow.

In the men's collegiate lightweight four, the Shoremen finished ninth of 11 boats in 14:50.45. Sixth-place New York Maritime and 11th-place Scranton joined the Shoremen as the only other boats in the race from non-NCAA Division I schools.  Penn's "B" boat won the race in 14:06.07, while its "A" boat was second in 14:12.03 and Navy's "A" boat was third in 14:16.90.

Junior Jeff Nutting (Catonsville, MD/Mount St. Joseph) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's boat in the men's collegiate lightweight four. Sophomore Colin Mitchell (Burlingame, CA/Burlingame) sat stroke, junior Mitch Witherow (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) was in the three seat, junior Lawrence Baker (Shady Side, MD/Southern) sat in the two seat, and sophomore Max Villa (Great Meadows, NJ/Pope John XXIII) was the bow.

Eight Shoremen rowers and one coxswain made their collegiate debuts in the men's collegiate frosh/novice eight as they finished 17th of 19 boats in 15:24.18. Rutgers-Camden, which finished 18th, was the only other boat in the race from a non-Division I school. Navy's "A" boat won in 12:18.86, Drexel was second in 12:32.25, and Penn's "A" boat was third in 12:44.73.

Freshman Jill Gobrecht (Hanover, PA/South Western) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's boat in the men's collegiate frosh/novice eight. Freshman Tyler Skibicki (Wilmington, DE/Concord) sat stroke, freshman Ben Sproule (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) was in the seven seat, freshman Ian Briggs (Huntsville, AL/The Gow School [NY]) sat in the six seat, freshman Andy Sauthoff (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall) was in the five seat, freshman Jon Rothermel (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) sat in the four seat, freshman Brian Zohorsky (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) was in the three seat, freshman Andrew Wallhauser (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Region) sat in the two seat, and freshman Mattias Falcon (Lexington Park, MD/Great Mills) was the bow.

The Shoremen's final event of the regatta was the men's open/collegiate eight. Washington's "A" boat was 14th of 22 boats in 13:29.70, while the "B" boat finished 20th in 134:03.88. The rest of the race was comprised of a boat from Rutgers-Camden, one from Pennsylvania Athletic Club, and 18 from NCAA Division I schools.  Navy's "A" boat won the race in 12:10.27, while Temple was second in 12:33.20 and Penn's "A" boat was third in 12:33.22.

Nutting was the coxswain of the Shoremen's "A" boat in the men's open/collegiate eight. Storck sat stroke, Stewart was in the seven seat, McIntosh was in the six seat, McCarthy sat in the five seat, Weishaar was in the four seat, Villa sat in the three seat, Baker was in the two seat, and DiMarino was the bow.

Sophomore Chris Moylan (Silver Spring, MD/DeMatha) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's "B" boat in the men's copen/ollegiate eight. Mitchell sat stroke, Witherow was in the seven seat, Annab was in the six seat, Howlett sat in the five seat, Pizzala sat in the four seat, Cairo was in the two seat, Billings sat in the two seat, and sophomore Chris Carrara (Leesburg, NJ/Millville) was the bow. 

The Shoremen return to action Sunday, October 16th, at the Occoquan Chase in Lorton, VA.
