Turn Back the Clock: Vintage Rowing Photos
Special thanks to alum Patrick Chambers '69 for sending along these photos of the men's crew club team from 1968. With reunion coming this weekend, it's the perfect time to take a look back.
The top photo below is a shot of the Kent County News from April 24, 1968. The paper is reporting on Washington College winning the first-ever rowing race on the Chester River against St. John's University. The Shoremen's varsity and junior varsity eights both won in that regatta. The caption from the newspaper identifies the varsity eight as: Andy Dyer (stroke), Chambers (seven), John Carlin (six), Chris Rogers (five), Paul Fastie (four), Bruce Hill (three), John Miller (two), Don Gilmore (bow and captain), and Larry Varnon (coxswain).
The second photo is another clipping from the same issue of the Kent County News as the varsity eight celebrates after learning they had won the race. The caption identifies Varnon's hat as floating in the foreground and indicates her was later tossed into the Chester in celebration.
The third shot below (and thumbnail to the right) is a team photo of the 1968 team. Thanks to Patrick for sending these along!
