LORTON, VA -- The Washington College men's rowing team finished second in the novice eight and third overall in the varsity four today at the Occoquan Sprints in Lorton, VA. The Shoremen also competed in the varsity four at the regatta.
Washington's novice eight finished its six-boat event in 6:17.5481. Delaware was first in 6:03.8002, William and Mary was third in 6:33.0224, Liberty was fourth in 6:45.4536, St. John's (MD) College was fifth in 7:10.2080, and UMBC was sixth in 8:10.1584.
The Shoremen's varsity eight was third of four boats in its heat in 6:11.8767 to advance to the grand final. Lehigh won the heat in 6:07.300, George Mason was second in 6:08.9933, and William and Mary was fourth in 6:17.7633. Washington was third in the grand final in 5:56.9967. Lehigh won the grand final in 5:53.0000, Delaware was second in 5:55.4433, George Mason was fourth in 5:57.4867, Loyola was fifth in 5:59.3700, and Mary Washington was sixth in 6:03.3967.
The Shoremen's varsity four was fifth in its five-boat race in 6:47.8512. Delaware won the race in 6:29.7003, Lehigh was second in 6:32.6258, Loyola was third in 6:42.2741, and Virginia Commonwealth was fourth in 6:43.1398.
Freshman Reese Laricks (Newark, DE/Delaware Military Academy) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's novice eight. Freshman Lawrence Baker (Shady Side, MD/Southern) sat stroke, freshman Mitch Witherow (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) was in the seven seat, freshman Joe Hemphill (Lexington, VA/Blue Ridge School) sat in the six seat, freshman Parker McIntosh (Berlin, MD/Worcester Prep) sat in the five seat, freshman Kyle Benk (Bloomsburry, NJ/Phillipsburg) was in the four seat, freshman Thomas Newton (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Huntingtown) was in the three seat, freshman Ryan Bankert (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) sat in the two seat, and freshman Josh Smith (Annapolis, MD/Southern) was the bow.
Senior Springer Harris (Huntingtown, MD/Northern) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's varsity eight. Senior Kevin Rodriguez (Fort Collins, CO/Fort Collins) sat stroke, junior Reno Smith (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) was in the seven seat, junior Michael Zaborskiy (Novosibirsk City, Russia/American School of Bangkok) sat in the six seat, senior Brandon Riker (Marlboro, VT/Twin Valley) was in the five seat, junior Will Herland (Seattle, WA/Lakeside School) sat in the four seat, sophomore Sean Harrison (Richmond, VA/Hazleton Area, PA) was in the three seat, senior Andrew Newell (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) sat in the two seat, and senior Dan Pierce (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) was the bow.
Junior Susanne Vaughn (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) was the coxswain of the Shoremen's varsity four. Freshman Robert Storck (Wilton, CT/St. Mark's School, MA) sat stroke, freshman Sam Hartman (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was in the three seat, sophomore Miqdad Annab (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) sat in the two seat, and senior Quentin Swain (Pasadena, MA/Mount St. Joseph) was the bow.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia.
