PERRY, NY -- The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) released the preseason edition of its weekly NCAA Division III Top 20 poll today and the Washington College Shoremen check in at number 15 on the list.
The Shoremen finished 11-6 overall last season and earned its first NCAA Division III Tournament berth since 2008. Washington went 7-1 over the course of its regular-season Centennial Conference schedule, earning the top seed and hosting rights for the four-team Centennial Conference Tournament for the first time since 2004. The Shoremen defeated McDaniel, 8-4, in the conference semifinals before falling to Dickinson, 11-6 in the conference title game. In the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament, Washington lost to visiting Goucher, 5-4.
Still, 2012 was a remarkable bounce-back year for the historic program. The Shoremen had gone a combined 9-19 over the previous two seasons, but their success last spring led to Centennial Conference Coach of the Year honors for Jeff Shirk, back for his third season as the Shoremen's head coach, and Centennial Conference Player of the Year and All-America honors for attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg), who returns for his senior year.
This marks the third preseason poll the Shoremen have been ranked in this season. The publications Inside Lacrosse and Lacrosse Magazine have the Shoremen ranked 17th and 15th, respectively.
The Shoremen will open their 2013 season February 23rd with a 2:30 p.m. game at Goucher.
