Shoremen Pull Away from Catholic in 13-6 Win

Cord Scores Career-High Five Goals

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) scored a career-high five goals and assisted on another as the Washington College men's lacrosse team improved to 3-2 with a 13-6 win over visiting Catholic in non-conference action tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.  The Shoremen scored the final seven goals of the game to pull away.

The Cardinals (6-2) struck first in the contest as Chris Fuccillo found the back of the net with 9:52 remaining in the opening quarter.  Junior attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) evened the score for the Shoremen 38 seconds later off an assist from sophomore attackman Jim Cusick (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall). Cusick then put the Shoremen in front with a goal with 17 seconds to go in the first.

Catholic opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals as Fuccillo scored off a feed from Tyler Catalani 48 seconds into the period and Marc Saxton scored with 11:45 on the clock to put the Cardinals in front, 3-2.  Cord netted an equalizer off an assist from sophomore attackman JD Campbell (Baltimore, MD/Mount St. Joseph) with 7:18 to go in the half. Washington went ahead just five seconds later as freshman midfielder Michael Trapp (White Plains, NY/White Plains) won the ensuing face-off and found Cord for a go-ahead goal. Washington added a pair of goals to its lead later in the quarter as senior midfielder Dave Lundquist (West Chester, PA/Henderson) scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Kodie Englehart (Coronado, CA/Coronado) with 6:14 remaining and freshman attackman Grant Hughes (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) netted Washington's sixth goal with 5:14 on the clock. The Cardinals pulled back to within two goals before halftime, however, as Catalani scored off a Fuccillo assist with 1:13 left before the break to trim the deficit to 6-4.

The Cardinals scored twice in the first 1:03 of the third quarter to even the score at 6-6. Fuccillo scored an extra-man goal 17 seconds into the period off an assist from Catalani and then netted an unassisted tally with 13:57 on the clock.  Neither team scored again until Cord gave Washington the lead for good with a goal with 8:39 left in the quarter to make it 7-6. A pair of late goals in the quarter gave Washington all the momentum as sophomore midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, MD/Franklin) scored an extra-man goal with 21 seconds left and senior midfielder Morgan Braendel (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts) fired in a goal with four seconds to go to extend the margin to 9-6. 

The Shoremen tacked on four more goals in the fourth quarter to provide the final margin. Cord found Cusick for a goal with 13:43 left and netted his fifth goal of the game with 10:55 to play. Cusick scored again, this time off a Nowicki assist, with 8:52 on the clock, and Lundquist rounded out the scoring with a goal with 5:03 left.

Joining Cord as multiple goal scorers for the Shoremen were Cusick, who finished with three goals and one assist, and Lundquist, who tallied two goals. Nowicki finished with a goal and an assist. Fuccillo (four goals and one assist) and Catalani (one goal and two assists) carried the offensive load for the Cardinals.

Senior goalie Peter Stewart (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) made 10 saves in the game for Washington, including six in the fourth quarter. Patrick Pfaff made 18 saves for Catholic before being pulled late in the contest.

The Shoremen held a sizable 53-24 advantage in shots in the game, 

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with their Centennial Conference opener, a 1:00 p.m. game at McDaniel.
