Poarch Scores 16 Points in Loss
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting McDaniel College staked out a 33-23 halftime lead and held on for a 57-53 Centennial Conference men's basketball victory over host Washington College tonight inside Cain Athletic Center. The Green Terror improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 1-3 and 1-1 with the loss.
Washington held an 11-6 lead five minutes into the game before the Green Terror held the Shoremen to just 12 points over the final 15 minutes of the first half. The Shoremen's final field goal of the half came with 6:06 remaining when junior guard Stephen Poarch (Middletown, Del./Sanford School) converted a fast-break lay-up to even the score at 21-21. McDaniel ended the half on a 12-2 run, capped off by a Phillip Perry lay-up with 47 seconds on the clock.
McDaniel's lead grew to as many as 13 points early in the second half before an 18-5 Washington run evened the game at 45-45 on a fast break jumper in the paint by junior guard John Weston (Tampa, Fla./Bolles School) with 6:55 on the clock. The Green Terror countered by scoring the next seven points to surge ahead, 52-45, on a Perry free throw with 4:14 left. Washington then scored the next five points to trim the margin to 52-50 on a Poarch free throw with 1:38 to play.
McDaniel turned the ball over on its next possession but a potential go-ahead three-pointer by Washington senior guard Kevin Cunningham (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) was off the mark with 51 seconds to go. Duane Echols was fouled and made a pair of free throws for the Green Terror with 27 seconds remaining, giving McDaniel the two-possession lead at 54-50. The Shoremen came up empty on the next possession and Wesley Brooks made one of two free throws with 14 seconds left to increase the lead to 55-50. Washington freshman guard Bryan Shapiro (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) knocked down a three with 1.9 seconds remaining, but Tim Stewart sealed the win for McDaniel by making a pair of free throws with 1.4 to go.
Perry and Brooks led a balanced offense for the Green Terror as each finished with 13 points. Brooks also dished out five assists. Echols added 11 points for McDaniel, while Evan Pupelis scored 10 points and brought down a team-best eight rebounds.
Poarch led all scorers with 16 points for the Shoremen. He also dished out five assists and pulled down five rebounds. Sophomore forward Pat Morgan (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) added 11 points, while senior forward Tony Hawkins (Mt. Ephraim, N.J./Haddon Township) scored 10 points, collected eight boards, and blocked two shots. Junior guard Sean Flanigan (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
McDaniel shot 46% from the field and 56% from the line in the win, while the Shoremen shot 35% and 67%, respectively. The Green Terror held a slim 33-31 advantage on the glass.
The Shoremen return to action one week from tonight with an 8:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Haverford.
