CHESTERTOWN, MD -- This weekend, the Washington College men's basketball team is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its first-ever game.
The Shoremen's first game was played December 7th, 1912 (a 54-11 loss to Baltimore Medical College). Since then, more than 600 student-athletes, managers, and coaches have been a part of a program that has piled up 1,053 all-time wins. Washington College men's basketball has made four NCAA Division III Tournament appearances, including a national third-place finish in 1990. Thirty-five basketball Shoremen have scored at least 1,000 career points and 88 former players and coaches have been inducted into the Washington College Hall of Fame.
Fittingly, the Shoremen will begin their second century Saturday, December 8th, 2012, against an opponent they have faced more often than any other - McDaniel College. Saturday's game, which will tip-off at 4:00 p.m., will be the 142nd all-time meeting between the two teams - a series which Washington leads, 80-61. The series began in the 1923-24 season with Washington beating Western Maryland (as McDaniel was then known) twice by scores of 45-11 and 44-22, respectively.
A number of Shoremen basketball alumni will be in attendance at Saturday's game and will be honored at halftime. Additional festivities during the weekend include a reception Friday night, an alumni game Saturday morning (at 11:00 a.m.), and a dinner and ceremony Saturday night. The Washington College women's basketball team will also hold its alumni game at 10:00 a.m. Saturday and will host Haverford College for a game at 2:00 p.m.
