Hughes Tabbed as Assistant Men's Hoops Coach
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Washington College head men's basketball coach Rob Nugent has announced the hiring of Robert Hughes as an assistant coach for the Shoremen. Hughes brings a strong coaching background with him to Chestertown.
Hughes spent the last two years as an assistant men's basketball coach at Drew University. While at Drew, he acted as the staff's lead recruiter and coordinated recruiting activities, aided in the preparation of practice and game plans, developed post-season individual workout, oversaw film exchange, and managed team travel, fundraising, and budgeting.
Prior to coming to Drew, Hughes had a long affiliation with the men's basketball program at Division I Saint Joseph's, dating back to his undergraduate days at the school. Beginning with the 2005-06 season, he spent three years as the head coach of the school's junior varsity team. During his four years as a student at the school, he served as head men's basketball manager. His duties as manager included preparing team meetings, coordinating tickets, and organizing practice and game materials.
Since February of 2008, Hughes has also served as the assistant camp director, dorm supervisor, and tournament site director for The Hoop Group, working camps and AAU events along the East Coast.
Hughes earned a B.S. in Food Marketing from Saint Joseph's in May 2003. He replaces Jonathan Webb on the Shoremen's bench. Webb recently accepted an assistant coaching position at Washington and Lee University.
The Washington College men's basketball team enjoyed its most successful season in nine years in 2009-10. The Shoremen finished third in the regular season conference standings, reached the Centennial Conference Semifinals, and had two players named to the All-Centennial Conference Team. In addition, Nugent was named the Centennial Conference Coach of the Year. The Shoremen return 14 players from last season, including junior guard/forward Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti), who averaged 15.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game en route to earning All-Centennial second team honors.
