CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Neumann University pounded out 16 hits in a 16-0 shutout of host Washington College in a non-conference baseball game this afternoon at Athey Park. The Knights improved to 16-8 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 12-15 with the loss.
The game was scoreless until Chestertown native and graduate of nearby Kent County High School Buddy Elgin led off the top of the fourth inning with a home run for the Knights. Neumann scored twice more in the fourth and three times in the fifth to take a six run lead. A pair of runs in the sixth and another in the seventh made the score 9-0 before Neumann scored seven times in the eighth, three of those coming on a home run by Matt Sheneman.
Elgin enjoyed a big day at the plate for Neumann, going -for-4 with three runs scored, a stolen base, and an RBI. Sheneman was 2-for-5 with a walk, three RBI, and four runs scored, while Ryan Ficca went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored for the Knights. Mike Dicken got the win for Neumann on the mound, allowing no runs on three hits and one walk in six innings of work. He struck out four batters while improving to 5-1 on the season. Jake Yarber, Richard Llagas, and Erik Klimoff each pitched an inning of hitless relief for Neumann and struck out two batters each.
Washington junior Ian Remington (Guilford, CT/Guilford) was the only Shoreman with two hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Junior Pat Kinsella (Guilford, CT/Guilford) accounted for the Shoremen's other hit with a pinch-hit single.
The Shoremen return to action tomorrow with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Swarthmore.
