Fall To Red Devils, 13-6, and Rams, 8-2
WINTER HAVEN, FL – Washington College dropped a pair of baseball games on Saturday at Chain of Lakes Park in non-conference baseball action at the RussMatt Baseball Central Florida Invitational. The Shoremen fell to Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham, 13-6, in the first game and dropped an 8-2 decision to Suffolk in the second contest. The Shoremen are now 2-4 on the year.
Against FDU-Florham (2-2), the Red Devils took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Frankie Tassielli hit a lead-off home run. The Shoremen responded in the bottom of the first when sophomore Scott Matthews (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco Prep (NJ) singled through the left side to plate senior Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) with one out to knot the game 1-1.
Tassilelli connected on his second home run of the game in as many at-bats when he socked a two-run homer to make it 3-1 FDU-Florham in the top of the third. The Red Devils went backt-to-back when the next batter, Brandan Adams hit a solo blast to push the lead to 4-1. Frank LaGuarina would score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ricky Gathen to make it 5-1.
Adams drove in Peter Amerosi with two outs on an RBI single to make it 6-1 in the top of the fourth. Connole cut the lead to 6-2 on a one out single that scored freshman Brian Quadrino (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East). WC trimmed the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Garrett Richardello (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of senior Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South).
The Red Devils added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh with two away as Tassilelli singled to center to send home Austin Tomasziewicz and John Bowe to push the lead to 8-3. Adams singled in Amerosi to cap the three-run rally and give FDU-Florham a 9-3 lead.
Washington got two back in the last of the seventh on back-to-back RBI doubles by sophomore Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) and junior Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) that scored Matthews and Thomas respectively to reduce the lead to 9-5.
FDU-Florham's Nick Meoli scored on an error by Washington to make it 10-5 in the top of the eighth and the Red Devils tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth to make it 13-5. The Shoremen got one in the bottom of the ninth to provide the final margin.
Tassielli was 5-for-6 with five RBI, two home runs and three runs scored to spark the FDU-Florham offense which had 15 hits in the win. Adams was 3-for-6 with three RBI, Core went 3-for-6 and Amerosi scored three times. Frank LaGuarina was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. On the mound, AJ Pichalski got the win in relief and is now 2-0. He tossed four innings and allowed three runs to record the victory.
For the Shoremen, Connole was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI as WC had 10 hits. Marinelli and Matthews both had two hits each. On the hill, senior pitcher Kyle Aldrich (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) took the loss and falls to 1-1. He lasted just four innings.
Versus Suffolk (1-1), Chris Stanley singled home Mac Jacobson for the game's first run and then Suffolk took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a Mike Cunningham three-run homer.
The Shoremen got on the board in the top of the third when Connole scored on an RBI groundout to first base off the bat of freshman Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, VA/Osbourn Park) to trim the lead to 4-1. Stanley responded with a sacrifice fly to left field in the last of the fourth to score Justin Knight to restore the four-run lead to 5-1.
The Rams expanded the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Mike Muse scored from first on an RBI two-bagger by JC Collette. Collette would score on an error by Washington to increase Suffolk's lead to 7-1 after five. Stanley scored on a run-scoring single to center by Jake Cintolo in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-1. Washington got one run back in the top half of the eighth when Matthews singled home Marinelli.
Cunningham and Cintolo each had three hits in five at-bats with Cunningham plating a game-high three runs. Stanley had two hits and two RBI in the victory for the Rams. Collette had a pair of hits in four at-bats as Suffolk pounded out 13 hits. On the mound, Josh Desai got the win as he went 7 2/3 innings and gave up two runs while scattering 10 hits. He struck out four and walked one in improving to 1-0 on the year.
Marinelli and sophomore Kyle Mikula (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) both had two hits for the Shoremen as WC had 10 hits versus the Rams. On the hill, freshman pitcher Sam McGovern (Middletown, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) took the loss and drops to 0-1. He allowed seven runs, six earned, in five innings and surrendered 10 hits.
Washington will play a doubleheader tomorrow against Becker College beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Auburndale, FL at the RussMatt Baseball Central Florida Invitational.
