Aldrich Tosses First Career Complete Game In Victory
ABERDEEN, MD – Sophomore pitcher Kyle Aldrich (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) tossed a complete game victory as visiting Washington College topped host Stevenson University, 8-2, on Monday afternoon at Yankee Stadium Field at Ripken Baseball Academy in non-conference baseball action. The Shoremen improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Mustangs fall to 5-10.
Aldrich, who went the distance for the first time, improves to 1-1 on the season. He scattered eight hits and struck out one to earn the win. The nine innings is also a career-high for innings thrown in a game by the sophomore. He did not walk a batter in the contest.
The Shoremen scored in the top of the first when junior John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum) plated sophomore Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) on an RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs leveled the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the first when Justin Anderson drove in Thomas Goulian from second base on a single.
Washington retook the lead in the top of the third when freshman Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) came home on a wild pitch with two away to put the visitors back up by a 2-1 margin.
The guests added another run in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Freshman Ian Remington (Guilford, CT/Guilford) led off the top of the fifth on a single to second base and came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Ryan Normoyle (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) to give WC a two-run cushion. The Mustangs had the tying run at the plate in the bottom half of the inning with one out, but Aldrich snared a liner off the bat of Goulian threw it to Cotterell at first base to double off Cody Schuchman and end the inning.
Washington scored four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-1 lead. Sophomore Joe Willis (Millica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Regional) reached on an error and moved to second on a walk to freshman Pat Kinsella (Guilford, CT/Guilford). Willis would come around to score on a base hit through the left side by freshman Mike Love (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) to make it 4-1 Shoremen. Love's single chased Stevenson starting pitcher Chris Street from the game. Remington walked against the new pitcher, Michael Patrick, to load the bases. The next batter, Marinelli singled to center and allowed Kinsella to dent home plate and made it 5-1 Washington. The Shoremen tacked on another run when Remington scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Normoyle to push the lead to 6-1. Marinelli would score on a balk to make it 7-1 and cap the scoring for the top half of the frame.
Washington tacked on a run in the top of the ninth when Remington chased home sophomore Ryan Mulhearn (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) on a single to left-center to make it 8-1. In the bottom of the ninth for Stevenson, Garrett Sites singled home Jeff Bihy on a hit up the middle to with two away to cut the lead to 8-2 and provide the final margin.
At the plate for the Shoremen, Marinelli led the way with a 3-for-5 afternoon with two runs scored and an RBI. Remington scored two runs and had two hits and Normoyle pounded out two hits for the guests.
For the Mustangs, Anderson, Bihy and Schuchman both had two hits in the loss. On the mound, Street took the loss and falls to 1-1 on the year. He allowed six runs, four earned and seven hits while striking out five batters in five-plus innings of work.
Washington will host in-state rival Frostburg State on Wednesday for a double-header which will begin at noon at Athey Baseball Park.
