2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College sailing team finished 17th of 19 teams at the Truxtun Umsted, a four-division co-ed intersectional regatta hosted by Navy, this weekend. Washington also finished 13th of 13 schools at the St. Mary's Women's Intersectional. At the Truxtun Umsted, Washington junior skipper Alex Hood (Newport, RI/Portsmouth Abbey) sailed with junior crew Shrijana Puri (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and sophomore crew Derek Packard (Excelsior, MN/Breck) to finish 13th in A Division. Freshman skipper Conner Blouin (Tampa, FL/Jesuit) sailed with freshman crew Krista Hankins (Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Regional) and sophomore crew Nicholas Larmore (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) to place 14th in B Division. Freshman Guy Tawney (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's School) and junior Parker Mitchell (Malibu, CA/Malibu) combined for an 18th-place finish in C Division sailing lasers, while freshman Patrick Clancy (Scituate, MA/Boston College HS) finished 18th in D Division. Fifth-ranked St. Mary's won the Truxtun Umsted, followed by fourth-ranked Hobart/William Smith in second and 17th-ranked New York Maritime in third. Twelve of the 20 schools ranked in the latest ICSA Co-Ed National Top 20 competed at the regatta. Two races in each division were sailed Saturday before racing was called due to weather. Nine races were sailed in each division under sunny skies and in 18-25 knots of breeze. At the St. Mary's Women's Intersectional, junior crew Meredith Dodd (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) and freshman crew Genevieve Smith (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) were 11th in A Division, while junior skipper Meredith Bluefeld (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) and junior crew Tonie Domino (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) were 13th in B Division. Fourth-ranked St. Mary's won the St. Mary's Women's Intersectional, while fifth-ranked Yale was second and eighth-ranked Tufts was third. Saturday's races were held in cold 20-knot winds from the northwest. Sunday saw similar conditions, but windier at times. Next weekend, the Washington College sailing team will compete at the Team Race Challenge hosted by New York Maritime. |
