2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College sailing team finished sixth of 10 teams at the John Jackson Memorial Team Race, hosted by Georgetown, and eighth of 16 teams at the ODU Open, hosted by Old Dominion, this weekend. At the ODU Open, freshman Patrick Clancy (Scituate, MA/Boston College HS) and junior crew Tonie Domino (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) were seventh in A Division, while junior skipper Meredith Dodd (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) and freshman crew Genevieve Smith (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) finished seventh in B Division. Seventh-ranked Georgetown won the ODU Open, followed by second-ranked St. Mary's in second and Old Dominion in third. Eight races were sailed on Saturday in a morning breeze of 4-10 knots out of the south shifting to the southwest and increasing to 17-29 knots. Sunday's breeze was west-northwest at 15-25 knots. Seven races were sailed in each division on Sunday. Junior skipper Alex Hood (Newport, RI/Portsmouth Abbey) and freshman Krista Hankins (Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Regional), junior skipper Parker Mitchell (Malibu, CA/Malibu) and sophomore crew Derek Packard (Excelsior, MN/Breck), and freshman skipper Conner Blouin (Tampa, FL/Jesuit) and junior crew Meredith Bluefeld (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) sailed for Washington at the John Jackson Memorial Team Race. Washington posted a 7-16 record at the regatta. Fourteenth-ranked Yale won the John Jackson Memorial Team Race, followed by eighth-ranked Hobart/William Smith in second and seventh-ranked Georgetown in third. Winds on Saturday started out light from the southeast with one race completed before the wind died. The Wind later filled in from the west-southwest at 10-20 miles per hour with higher gusts and eventually shifted to the northeast at 10-15 miles per hour. Seventy-five races were completed on Saturday. On Sunday, the second round robin was completed in a west-northwest wind of 15-25 miles per hour. A championship round robin for the top six teams and a consolation round for the bottom four were then completed. Strong, shifty winds provided for some challenging racing with numerous capsizes. Next weekend, the Washington College sailing team will compete at the Admiral Moore, hosted by New York Maritime, and the St. Mary's Team Race Intersectional. |
