CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Washington College senior Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) finished sixth of 16 sailors at the Carl Van Duyne Trophy, the MAISA Men's Singles Championships, held this weekend at Kings Point. The Washington College sailing team also finished 11th of 13 teams at the Navy Women's Fall Intersectional and 12th of 12 teams at the Hap Moore Team Race Regatta hosted by Coast Guard this weekend.

Horrocks recorded four top-five finishes, including a first-place finish, in the 13 races held at the Carl Van Duyne Trophy. All four of his top-five finishes came in the final six races of the event. His performance in the final races moved him from 12th place overall through seven races to his final overall finish of sixth.

Andrew Campbell of Georgetown, Chris Branning of Kings Point, and Alex Steele of St. Mary's finished first, second, and third, respectively, at the Carl Van Duyne Trophy to earn berths in the ICSA North American Men's Singles Championships. Campbell is the defending ICSA North American Champion.

Four races were held at the Carl Van Duyne trophy on Saturday with winds starting at 15-20 knots out of the south and building to 20-25 knots through the fourth race. Two attempts were made to continue sailing on Saturday, but gusts up to 51 knots ripped many sails and ended racing for the day. Sunday's racing started in the morning with 15 knots out of the north and slowly decreasing in velocity throughout the day.

At the Navy Women's Fall Intersectional, sophomore skipper Meredith Dodd (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) and sophomore crew Tonie Domino (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) finished 11th in A Division. Sophomore skipper Meredith Bluefeld (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) and freshman crew Nina Penman (Island Heights, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) were 11th in B Division, while freshman Jenn Tonks (Cumberland, ME/Greely) was 11th in C Division.

Yale, ranked first in the national women's rankings, won the Navy Women's Fall, followed by second-ranked Dartmouth in second and fourth-ranked Georgetown in third. Saturday's races were sailed in winds of 18-25 knots from the south with rain squalls and steep waves. Sunday saw much lighter winds coming out of the north-northwest at 4-8 knots. A total of 13 races were sailed in each division. A steady 15-25 knot northerly wind held throughout the completion of the second round robin on Sunday.

Sophomore skipper Alex Hood (Newport, RI/Portsmouth Abbey) and freshman crew Colleen Kelly (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan), freshman skipper Nick Larmore (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) and sophomore crew Alexandria Starks (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan), and sophomore skipper Parker Mitchell (Malibu, CA/Malibu) and freshman crew Derek Packard (Excelsior, MN/Breck) represented Washington at the Hap Moore Team Race.

Yale, ranked 12th in the national co-ed rankings, won the Hap Moore Team Race with a 19-3 record. Eleventh-ranked St. Mary's was second (17-5), while 10th-ranked Tufts finished third (16-6). Saturday's racing saw lots of rain, but terrific team race conditions with a breeze of 5-10 knots out of the south all day.

The Washington College sailing team, ranked 19th in the national co-ed rankings, will host the WC Open and will compete at the Navy Fall Intersectional next weekend.
