3, 2005 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College sailing team competed in two regattas this weekend, placing second of 19 teams at the Ocean County Spring Open and finishing 14th of 18 teams at the Boston Dinghy Cup, hosted by Harvard and M.I.T. Freshman skipper Parker Mitchell (Malibu, CA/Malibu) and freshman crew Alexandria Starks (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) finished in first place in B Division at the Ocean County Spring Open. Mitchell and Starks won five B Division races, finished second in three races, and placed third and fourth in the other two B Division races, respectively. Freshman skipper Alex Hood (Newport, RI/Portsmouth Abbey) and freshman crew Meredith Bluefeld (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) finished second in A Division, placing in the top five in nine of the 10 races in the division. Host Ocean County College won the Ocean County Spring Open. Pennsylvania finished third. Winds were 20 miles per hour out of the southeast with gusts over Thursday Saturday. Sundays races were sailed in 15 mile-per hour winds out of the southwest. At the Boston Dinghy Cup, junior skipper Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) and freshman crew Hanna Lee (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) finished 13th in A Division, while senior skipper Colin Robertson (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) and freshman crew Nicole Luckett (Centreville, MD/Chestertown Christian Academy) were 13th in B Division. Senior skipper Chad Hillyer (Summit, NJ/Morristown-Beard) and sophomore crew Vanessa Anderson (Narragansett, RI/The Prout School) sailed to a sixth place finish in C Division. Freshman skipper Chase Hillyer (Summit, NJ/Morristown-Beard) and freshman crew Tonie Domino (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) were 16th in D Division. Tenth-ranked Brown won the Boston Dinghy Cup, followed by 12th-ranked Tufts in second and sixth-ranked Brown in third. Saturday morning's races were held in a driving rain and southeast to easterly winds of 15-20 knots. Saturday afternoon saw no rain and winds declining to 10 knots and turning northeast. Sunday saw southerly winds of 3-20 knots. Next weekend, the Washington College sailing team will compete in the Prosser Trophy, hosted by St. Mary's, the Maryland Spring Open, and the WAC Women's Open, to be held on the Chester River. |
