6, 2005 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College sailing team eighth of 16 teams at the MAISA Fall Women's Championships, hosted by New York Maritime, this weekend. WC also finished 17th of 18 teams at the Atlantic Coast Freshman Championships, hosted by Brown University, this weekend. At the MAISA Fall Women's Championships, sophomore skipper Meredith Dodd (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) and sophomore crew Tonie Domino (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) finished 10th in A Division. Freshman skipper Jenn Tonks (Cumberland, ME/Greely) and sophomore crew Meredith Bluefeld (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) were eighth in B Division. Tonks and Bluefeld finished in the top 10 in six of the seven B Division races. Navy, ranked sixth in the latest Sailing
World Women's National Rankings, won the MAISA Fall Women's Championships.
Second-ranked St. Mary's was second, followed by Hobart/William Smith
in third. Four A Division and two B Division races were sailed in Saturday.
The wind was light and variable with a good amount of current. Sunday
morning saw a thick fog that did not dissipate until 11:00 a.m. The
breeze filled in from the south and eventually built to 15 knots by
the end of At the Atlantic Coast Freshman Championships, freshman skipper Nick Larmore (Wilmette, IL/New Trier) and freshman crew Seth Olson (Branford, CT/Branford) finished 16th in A Division. Freshman skipper Derek Packard (Excelsior, MN/Breck) and freshman crew Nina Penman (Island Heights, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) were 16th in B Division. Boston College finished first overall at the Atlantic Coast Freshman Championships, while Hobart/William Smith was second and Charleston was third. Saturday's races started with a five-knot southeasterly wind that built to 10 knots in the afternoon. Sunday's races were postponed until noon when a light southerly filled in. The breeze eventually built to 7-10 knots. Eleven races were sailed in each division at the regatta. Next weekend, the WC sailors are slated to compete at the Atlantic Coast Co-Ed Dinghy Championships at St. Mary's and the Atlantic Coast Women's Championships at Coast Guard. |
