17, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The 17th-ranked Washington College sailing team participated in two regattas this weekend. Washington finished 12th of 20 schools at the Navy Fall Intersectional and eighth of 12 schools at the WAC Open, held on the Chester River. Senior skipper Colin Robertson (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) and sophomore crew Vanessa Anderson (Narragansett, RI/The Prout School) sailed to a seventh-place finish in A Division at the Navy Fall, while junior Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) and freshman crew Alexandria Starks (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) finished sixth in B Division. Freshman Parker Mitchell (Malibu, CA/Malibu) sailed eight races in C Division at Navy on Saturday, but was hit by a boom and suffered a concussion. Freshman Chase Hillyer (Summit, NJ/Morristown-Beard) filled in for Mitchell on Sunday and Washington finished 15th in C Division. Freshman Alex Hood (Newport, RI/Portsmouth Abbey) placed 12th in D Division. Eleventh-ranked Kings Point won the Navy Fall Intersectional, followed by fourth-ranked Yale in second and seventh-ranked Hobart/William Smith in third. Twelve races were sailed in each division on Saturday and eight were sailed in each division on Sunday. Both days featured strong breezes of 12-22 knots. At the WAC Open, sophomore skipper Alex Mudge (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and freshman crew Tonie Domino (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) finished seventh in A Division. Hillyer and sophomore Matt Lyman (Salem, OR/South Salem) skippered Washington in B Division on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, while freshmen Meredith Bluefeld (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) and Nicole Luckett (Centreville, MD/Chestertown Christian Academy) served as crews. Washington finished eighth in B Division. St. Mary's won the WAC Open, followed by Ocean County in second and Hampton in third. Twelve races were sailed in each division. On Saturday, the sailors enjoyed a nice West/North-westertly breeze at 14-18 kts all day. Sunday's racing began with a Northwest of 15-19kts that clocked towards the north by the end of the day. Next weekend, members of the Washington College sailing team will compete at the MAISA Freshman regatta at Cornell and the MAISA Sloop Championships at New York Maritime. |
