Washington Sailors Compete at Three Regattas

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Members of the 16th-ranked Washington College sailing team competed at three regattas over the weekend. Washington finished 12th of 18 teams at the Danmark Trophy, an intersectional regatta hosted by Coast Guard. Freshman Meredith Dodd (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) finished 19th at the Faye Bennet/MAISA Women's Singles Championship, hosted by Navy. Washington also competed in the Tom Curtis Memorial, a MAISA regatta hosted by Georgetown, and finished eighth of 17 teams.

At the Danmark Trophy, senior Colin Robertson (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's), sailing with freshman crew Hanna Lee (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis), skippered Washington to a 15th-place finish in A Division. Junior skipper Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) and freshman crew Alexandria Starks (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) were eighth in B Division.

Fourth-ranked St. Mary's (MD) won the Danmark Trophy, followed by fifth-ranked Yale in second and third-ranked Dartmouth in third. A total of 18 races were sailed in each division, 10 on Saturday and eight on Sunday. Saturday's races were held in a light southerly wind with a strong outgoing current. Sunday's races began with a 10-15 knot northerly wind that faded to less than five knots by the end of the regatta.

At the MAISA Women's Singles Championship, Dodd finished 19th of 34 sailors. Seventeen races were held at the event in 3-5 knot winds from the South on Saturday and 3-8 knot winds from the North on Sunday.

Sophomore skipper Vanessa Anderson (Narragansett, RI/The Prout School) and freshman crew Tonie Domino (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill) finished eighth in A Division for Washington at the Tom Curtis, while sophomore skipper Alex Mudge (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and freshman crew Penny Mause (Washington, DC/Langley, VA) finished eighth in B Division.

St. Mary's (MD) won the Tom Curtis Memorial, followed by eighth-ranked Georgetown in second and 18th-ranked Old Dominion in third. Eight races were sailed in each division. Saturday's races were held in 7-10 mile per hour winds from the South with a strong current. Sunday's winds began at 8-12 mph from the North, then died down before a light east-northeast wind allowed completion of the final two B Division races.

Next weekend, the Washington College sailing team is scheduled to compete at the Hobart & William Smith Fall Intersectional and the Navy Women's Fall Intersectional. Horrocks will be competing at the MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championships at Navy next weekend.
