Washington Places in
Top Five at Two Regattas

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The 16th-ranked Washington College sailing team finished fifth of 20 teams this weekend at the Nevins Trophy, an intersectional regatta hosted by Kings Point. Washington also finished fourth of 12 teams at the Freshman Groundbreaker, hosted by New York Maritime.

At the Nevins Trophy, senior skipper Colin Robertson (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) and sophomore crew Vanessa Anderson (Narragansett, RI/The Prout School) placed second in A Division, finishing first in two of the division's five races. Junior skipper Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) and freshman crew Alexandria Starks (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) were fourth in B Division, while freshman Parker Mitchell (Malibu, CA/Malibu) placed 12th in C Division.

Fifth-ranked St. Mary's (MD) won the Nevins Trophy, followed by 10th-ranked Boston College in second place and eighth-ranked Kings Point in third. The regatta was limited to five races on Sunday as 25-35 knot winds, large waves, and heavy rains prevented racing on Saturday. Sunday's conditions were still challenging with a breeze of 20-25 knots and gusts to 30 knots from the north-northeast. Sunday's races featured numerous capsizes and breakdowns.

At the Freshman Groundbreaker, skipper Alex Hood (Newport, RI/Portsmouth Abbey) and crew Lex Burns (Westport, CT/Staples) placed fourth in A Division. Skipper Meredith Dodd (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) and crew Meredith Bluefeld (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) finished sixth in B Division. Full results from B Division are not yet available.

St. Mary's placed first at the Freshman Groundbreaker, followed by Navy in second and Kings Point in third.

Next weekend, the Washington College sailing team is scheduled to compete at the St. Mary's Open and the Laser Qualifier South, hosted by Navy.
