12, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The 16th-ranked Washington College sailing team competed in two regattas this weekend, the Navy Laser Open and the Captain Hurst Bowl. Junior Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) finished fourth at the Navy Laser Open, earning a berth in next month's MAISA Singlehanded Championships. In addition to Horrocks, two other Washington sailors competed at the Navy Laser Open. Freshman Parker Mitchell (Malibu, CA/Malibu) finished 16th, while sophomore Matt Lyman (Salem, OR/South Salem) finished 28th. Saturday's 12 races were sailed in a 5-12 knot northeasterly wind with a fair amount of chop. Two races were held on Sunday in a 4-6 knot easterly wind before the breeze cut out and the chop took over. At the Captain Hurst Bowl, hosted by Dartmouth, Washington finished 20th of 24 teams. Senior skipper Colin Robertson (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) and sophomore crew Vanessa Andeson (Narragansett, RI/The Prout School) placed 17th in A Division, while senior skipper Chad Hillyer (Summit, NJ/Morristown-Beard) and freshman crew Hanna Lee finished 21st in B Division. Second-ranked Harvard won the regatta, followed by 13th-ranked Brown in second and fifth-ranked St. Mary's (MD) in third. Conditions at the Captain Hurst were decidedly less than ideal. A complete absence of win on Saturday prevented any races from being held on that day. After a long postponement on Sunday, a light and sporadic westerly breeze eventually came in and peaked around five miles per hour. Four races in each division were held on Sunday. Next weekend, the Washington College sailing team is scheduled to compete at the Nevins Trophy, hosted by Kings Point, and the Freshman Groundbreaker, hosted by New York Maritime. |
