25, 2004 NEW LONDON, CT -- The Washington College sailing team finished 14th of 18 schools at the Thompson Trophy, hosted by Connecticut College and held yesterday and today in New London, CT. St. Mary's (MD) won the regatta, followed by Brown in second and USC in third. Sophomore Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro), sailing with freshman crews Alex Mudge (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and Lindsey Bowman (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook), skippered Washington to an 11th-place finish in A Division. Washington finished in 14th in B Division. Junior skipper Chad Hillyer (Summit, NJ/Morristown-Beard) and freshman crew Vanessa Anderson (Narragansett, RI/The Prout School) sailed for WC in B Division. Saturday's racing began with a 10-15 knot northwesterly breeze. The wind shifted to a 14-20 knot northerly around noon. The strong breeze caused many capsizes. On Sunday, the first two B division races were completed in a dying northerly, which gave way to a 10-12 knot southerly. Next weekend, the WC sailors will compete at the America Trophy, the MAISA Spring Championships, hosted by Hobart & William Smith. |
