1, 2004 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The 16th-ranked Washington College sailing team finished sixth of seven teams this weekend in the MAISA Team Race held on the Chester River. WC, the host team for the event, finished with a 4-6 record at the event after going 3-5 in the open round robin portion and 1-1 in the consolation bracket. Freshman Vanessa Anderson (Narragansett, RI/The Prout School), freshman Lindsey Bowman (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook), junior Chad Hillyer (Summit, NJ/Morristown-Beard), sophomore Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro), freshman Alex Mudge (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield), and freshman Nat Thompson (Frederick, MD/Westtown, PA) sailed for Washington in the event. Eleventh-ranked St. Mary's (MD), 13th-ranked Georgetown, third-ranked Kings Point, and Maryland advanced to final four. St. Mary's (MD) won the regatta with an 11-1 record, while Georgetown was second at 7-5, Kings Point was third at 6-6, and Maryland was fourth at 5-7. Saturday began at 40 degrees with light and variable north winds warming to 55 degrees by the end of the day. At noon racing was postponed for lack of breeze. Thirty minutes later the wind filled in from the west at 8-10 knots and racing was resumed. A full round-robin of 21 races was completed by the end of the day. Sunday morning, racers enjoyed 50 degrees warming to 63. Winds began light and variable from the west progressing to nearly 13 knots by the end of the day. Two final four round robins were completed as well as two consolation round robins. The WC sailing team is back in action this weekend at the ODU Open, hosted by Old Dominion. |
