6, 2003 LONG BEACH, CA -- The 15th-ranked Washington College sailing team traveled over 3,000 miles to compete in the Rose Bowl Regatta this past weekend and came away with ninth-place finish in a competitive field of 19 teams. The regatta was hosted by the University of Southern California and was held at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. Washington finished eighth in A Division behind junior skipper Mike Buckley (Sandwich, MA/Tabor Academy) and sophomore crew Diane Morrow (Tabernacle, NJ/Shawnee). In B Division, sophomore skipper Colin Robertson (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) and junior crew Jennifer Hanley (Sparks, MD/Maryvale Prep) sailed to a ninth-place finish. Ninth-ranked Stanford finished first overall at the regatta and won A Division. Third-ranked Southern Cal was second overall, followed by 16th-ranked Dartmouth in third, second-ranked St. Mary's (MD) in fourth, and unranked UC-Santa Barbara in fifth. Hawaii took first place in B Division and finished sixth overall. Saturday's and Sunday's races were held in similar weather with sunny skies and temperatures approaching 80 degrees. Light air filling in mid-day and dying in the mid to late afternoons of each day limited the regatta to five races in each division. Races were sailed in a light two-to-six knot breeze that was relatively steady. The WC sailing team begins its spring 2003 schedule next month. |
