30, 2003 KINGS POINT, NY -- The 10th-ranked Washington College sailing team placed sixth of 14 teams at the Kings Point Spring Open, held yesterday and today in strong winds. Freshman skipper Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) and freshman crew Heidi Cornell (Baltimore, MD/Eastern Tech) finished third in B Division to lead the WC effort. Cornell was competing in an intercollegiate sailing event for the first time. In A Division, sophomore skipper Nathan St. Onge (Hyannis, MA/Barnstable) and sophomore crew Halle Ricker (Traceys Landing, MD/St. Mary's) finished in eighth place. Host Kings Point, ranked 17th, won the event. Second-ranked St. Mary's (MD) was second, while 18th-ranked Navy finished third. Saturday's breeze started off from the South
at 10-15 knots and quickly built to 20 knots. Later in the day, the
winds increased to 25-30 knots. Sunday's temperatures were 25 degrees
cooler and the wind shifted to the North beginning at 10-15 knots but
quickly picking up. After race six in each division fleets were switched.
Race seven was started and sailed in 20+ knots. Over ten boats were
capsized at one point and competitors were having trouble trying to
right their boats. After the completion of race seven Next weekend WC will compete at SUNY-Maritime's MAISA Team Race. |
