30, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The 16th-ranked Washington College sailing team finished fourth of 10 teams at the MAISA Sloop Championships, hosted by Navy, and sixth of 18 teams at the St. Mary's (MD) Open this past Saturday and Sunday. Participating for WC in its fourth-place effort at the MAISA Sloops were junior Mike Buckley (Sandwich, MA/Tabor Academy) and sophomores Colin Robertson (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's), Nathan St. Onge (Hyannis, MA/Barnstable), and Max von Roth (Weston, VT/Long Trail). Sixth-ranked Hobart/William Smith finished first at the MAISA Sloop Championships, while 17th-ranked Navy took second and fourth-ranked St. Mary's (MD) was third. The regatta sailed in northwesterly winds of 12 knots, decreasing to eight knots, on Saturday and in northerly winds of six knots, decreasing to three knots, on Sunday. At the St. Mary's (MD) Open, freshman skipper Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) and sophomore crew Diane Morrow (Tabernacle, NJ/Shawnee) finished fifth in A Division, while junior Chad Hillyer (Summit, NJ/Morristown-Beard) and sophomore Halle Ricker (Traceys Landing, MD/St. Mary's) placed sixth in B Division. Hobart/William Smith also won the St. Mary's Open, with 14th-ranked Georgetown finishing second and 19th-ranked Old Dominion coming in third. Saturday's races were held in northerly winds of 15 knots, decreasing to eight knots. Sunday saw shifty northerly winds of two to eight knots. WC will compete at the Tom Curtis Memorial at Georgetown this Saturday and Sunday. |
