23, 2002 KINGS POINT, NY -- The Washington College sailing team, ranked 16th in the latest Sailing World Co-Ed College Rankings, finished seventh of 20 teams at this past weekend's Nevins Trophy, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point). Thirteen of the 20 schools represented at the event are currently ranked in the top 20 nationally. Washington's highest divisional finish was in A division, where junior skipper Mike Buckley (Sandwich, MA/Tabor Academy) and sophomore crew Diane Morrow (Tabernacle, NJ/Shawnee) finished sixth. In B Division, sophomores Colin Robertson (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) and Nathan St. Onge (Hyannis, MD/Barnstable) and junior Jen Hanley (Sparks, MD/Maryvale Prep) finished tenth, while in C Division, freshman Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) skippered WC to a seventh-place finish. Host Kings Point, currently ranked seventh, won the event. Sixth-ranked Hobart/William Smith finished second, while fourth-ranked St. Mary's (MD) took third. The WC sailors finished higher than five schools currently ranked ahead of them: third-ranked Tufts (12th), 11th-ranked Yale (10th), 12th-ranked Boston College (eighth), 13th-ranked College of Charleston (11th), and 15th-ranked Connecticut College (13th). Yale took first place in A division, Kings Point won in B division, and 14th-ranked Georgetown, which finished fourth overall, finished first in C division. The regatta featured two days of excellent sailing conditions. Saturday saw a south-southwest wind of 8-12 knots in the morning build to 15 knots in the afternoon. Sunday's races were held in a south breeze of 10-14 knots. WC will compete at the St. Mary's (MD) College Open and the MAISA Sloops, hosted by Navy, this coming Saturday and Sunday. |
