28, 2002 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The 17th-ranked Washington College sailing team finished eighth of 18 schools at the Hoyt Trophy hosted by Brown University this past weekend. Junior Mike Buckley (Sandwich, MA/Tabor Academy) skippered WC to a third-place finish in A Division for the second time in as many weeks. Buckley's crews were sophomore Diane Morrow (Tabernacle, NJ/Shawnee) and freshman Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro). One week prior to the event, Buckley skippered a third-place A Division finish at the Navy Fall Intersectional. In B Division, WC finished in 10th place. Sophomore Colin Robertson (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's), Horrocks, junior Jennifer Hanley (Sparks, MD/Maryvale Prep), and Morrow represented WC in B Division. Host Brown, currently ranked 12th in the Sailing World College Co-Ed Rankings, claimed first place overall at the regatta. Sixth-ranked Boston College was second and fifth-ranked Hobart/William Smith was third. Thirteen nationally-ranked teams competed in the event. Washington finished ahead of five teams currently ranked in front of WC. Saturday was a very cold and wet day for sailing, with extremely heavy rain at times. Winds started out of the east at 5-8 knots and slowly went north building to15 knots by the end of the day. Sunday, on the other hand, was a gorgeous day on the water with a north-northwest wind of 6-16 knots. Next weekend, the Shore sailors will compete at the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association fall championships, the War Memorial Regatta, at St. Mary's (MD). |
