Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championships

NEW LONDON, CT -- The 14th-ranked Washington College sailing team finished 12th of 16 teams at this weekend's Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championships held at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT.

A sixth-place finish in B Division led the Washington effort. Sophomore Colin Robertson (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) skippered the B Division boat for 14 of the races, while freshman Carl Horrocks (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) skippered the other two. Junior Jennifer Hanley (Sparks, MD/Maryvale Prep) and sophomore Diane Morrow (Tabernacle, NJ/Shawnee) were the crews.

WC finished 14th in A Division. Junior skipper Mike Buckley (Sandwich, MA/Tabor Academy) sailed with Morrow and junior Chad Hillyer (Summit, NJ/Mooristown-Beard) in A Division.

WC's 298 points were just nine points out of eighth place. Fourth-ranked St. Mary's (MD) won the regatta, followed by top-ranked Harvard in second and tenth-ranked King's Point in third. WC finished ahead of 20th-ranked M.I.T., 15th-ranked Navy, second-ranked Georgetown, and South Florida.

Saturday's races were sailed in northeasterly winds of 10-15 knots with cold rain and drizzle. Sunday saw northerly winds of 18-24 knots with stronger gusts, more rain, and stronger outgoing current.

Washington will compete at the SAISA/MAISA regatta next weekend.
