10, 2001 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College
sailing team competed in three events Saturday and Sunday: The Hurst
Bowl at Dartmouth, the Riley Cup at Old Dominion, and the Laser Opener
at Navy. At the Hurst Bowl, WC placed 15th in a field
of 24 schools. This regatta was plagued by light winds allowing for
only four races in each division. In A division, sophomore Mike Buckley
(Sandwich, MA/Tabor Academy) and senior crew Lisa Semanick (Baltimore,
MD/Western Tech) finished in eighth place. In B division, seniors
Simon Day (Middletown, RI/Rocky Hill) and Sarah Corson (Demarest,
NJ/The Masters School, NY) placed 21st. Harvard University won the
regatta followed by Boston College and Hobart. At the Riley Cup, WC finished fourth in a
field of 14 schools. In A division, freshman Colin Robertson (Annapolis,
MD/St. Mary's) and senior Kristin Samuel (Hudson, OH/Western
Reserve Academy) finished fifth in A divison, just seven points
out of first. In B division, sophomore Nathan St. Onge (Hyannis,
MA/Barnstable) and freshman Max von Roth (Weston, VT/Long Trail)
placed fourth. This finish qualified Washington College for the Middle
Atlantic Fall Championships in October. Georgetown University won the
Riley Cup, followed by Navy and Old Dominion. At the Navy Laser Opener, sophomore Joe
Brooks (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-South Dorchester) represented WC
in a very competitive field, finishing 21st. Next week, Washington will compete at the Nevin's Trophy hosted by King's Point.
