Sailing Coaching Staff

Head Coach: Geoff Becker

Geoff Becker returned for his second stint as the head sailing coach at Washington College in the summer of 2004.

Becker's coaching background includes over 15 years of sailing instructional experience. While serving as WC's head coach in 2002-03, Becker helped lift the WC sailing team to new heights. Under his guidance, Washington sailed to its best-ever finishes at both the War Memorial (the MAISA Fall Championships) and the America Trophy (the MAISA Spring Championships). In 2004-05, Becker guided Washington to its first-ever team race regatta victory and its third-ever women's regatta victory. Washington also matched its best-ever finish at the America Trophy in Becker's first year back at the College. During the 2005-06 season, Becker led WC to a second-place finish at the MacMillan Cup in Washington's second-ever offshore competition and once again guided the team to its best-ever finish at the America Trophy. Becker led Washington to its first-ever appearance in a national championship-level regatta when the team qualified for the ICSA Co-Ed Dinghy National Championship Semifinals in 2008.

After his first stop at Washington, Becker spent the following year as an assistant coach at Navy. Navy's women's sailing team finished third at the ICSA North American Women's Dinghy Championship in June, while the co-ed team finished sixth at the America Trophy.

Prior to his first stint at Washington, Becker had most recently served as the dinghy coach at St. Mary's (MD) College, where he coached three national championship teams and 20 ICSA All-Americans. His first collegiate coaching job was at UC-Santa Barbara, where he founded the head coaching position. Later, he served as the dinghy coach at USC, where he led the dinghy team to two ICYRA Dinghy Nationals in three years after a six-year drought.

A certified US Sailing Instructor Trainer since 1993, Becker has also held managerial and directorial positions at the Annapolis Yacht Club, the US Sailing Center in Long Beach, CA, and at the Santa Barbara Youth Foundation. Becker has served as a US Sailing Certified Judge since 1994, as the Chairman of the ICSA Procedural Rules Committee since 1999, and as a member of the US Sailing Racing Rule Committee since 2002.

Becker graduated from UC-Irvine in 1993, where he was a two-time All-American and attended five consecutive ICRYA National Dinghy Championships. He continues to take part in competitive sailing and he authored the book "Sailing Drills Made Easy."
