October 7, 2008 LAS VEGAS, NV - Washington College head men's and women's tennis coach Dave Marshall and recreation director Mike Duquette were two members of the USTA Middle States team which won the United States Tennis Association League National Championship, Men's 5.5 Division, held September 26th-29th in Las Vegas. USTA Middle States, from Sea Colony Tennis Center in Delaware, took home top honors in the 5.5 division by defeating USTA Nor Cal in the finals. The team, captained by Marshall, finished 3-0 in its flight before advancing to the championship bracket, defeating teams from USTA Intermountain, USTA Pacific Northwest, and USTA Southwest. USTA Middle States finished with a 7-2 individual match record in flight play. In the championship bracket, USTA Middle States defeated USTA Midwest, 2-1, before downing USTA Nor Cal, 2-1. The team dedicated its victory to Sea Colony tennis pro Harry Hipps, who is battling lung cancer, and held signs honoring him in the championship photo. Hipps has been with Sea Colony since 1989. The win marks the third USTA League National Championship in a row for team captain Marshall. His team won the 5.0 division in 2006 and the Open Invitational in 2007.
