2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD - Two Washington College student-athletes have been named to the 2008 ESPN the Magazine College Division Academic All-District II Men's At-Large teams. Junior tennis player Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) was named to the first team, while junior lacrosse attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) was named to the second team. The Academic All-District teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Ten student-athletes were named to the ESPN the Magazine College Division Academic All-District II Men's At-Large first team and 10 more were named to the second team. The men's at-large team is open to athletes competing in golf, rifle, volleyball, gymnastics, skiing, water polo, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, wrestling, lacrosse, and tennis. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA. The nominee must also be of at least sophomore standing. District II of the College Division includes all NCAA Division II and III and NAIA institutions located in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Green, who was also named to this year's ESPN the Magazine College Division Academic All-District II Men's Basketball first team, went 16-5 in singles for the Shoremen tennis team this season, including a 12-2 record in dual matches, playing primarily at No. 3 and No. 4. His 16 singles wins were second-most on the team this season. He was also 9-9 in doubles. Green, who helped lead the Shoremen to a 14-3 record and a Centennial Conference Playoff berth, earned Team Co-MVP honors and earned a spot on the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll. Through the spring 2008 semester, Green has maintained a grade-point average of 3.962 while majoring in Math. Kielek, who was named a 2008 All-Centennial Conference honorable mention and earned a spot on the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll, scored 32 goals and handed out a team-best 37 assists for the Shoremen lacrosse team. Kielek led the Centennial Conference in assists per game, finished fourth in the conference in points per game, and was 11th in the conference in goals per game. He helped the Shoremen to a 14-4 record, Centennial Conference Championship game appearance, and NCAA Division III Quarterfinal appearance. Through the 2008 spring semester, Kielek has maintained a grade-point average of 3.845 while majoring in Biology. Green and the other athletes named to the All-District first team qualify for the Academic All-America ballot. |
